We've all been working hard to prepare for our upcoming fall term, and as we continue to see shifts in plans, policies, and public health-related in-person requirements, we need to stay agile and flexible in planning as much as ever. Resilience is quickly becoming one of the most important characteristics we bring to our experiences in education in every role: student, faculty, and administrative staff. This month we're sharing a link to a new interactive and dynamic resource for sharing ideas and language to support students choosing among the various modes your HyFlex course offers. Supports like these can help us support resilience in students.
Supporting Students' Mode Choice
"What mode should I participate in today?" might be something your HyFlex students ask themselves every day or week your class meets. Last month in the HLC webinar, we shared a Google doc with ideas on ways to support students asking this question - and suggested language that you can use, revise, download, etc. Now that Google doc is available embedded in a new page on the HLC website: https://www.hyflexlearning.org/choosing_a_mode/
Members are able to view the doc, add their comments and make changes (yes, it is editable), download and use as they desire in their own contexts. Please add your great ideas for all of us to share!
Gathering Online August 20, 2021
We are hosting our next HyFlex Learning Community gathering (online) on August 20, 2021 from 11:00am-12:00pm PT. This month, we are discuss Learning Environment Modeling Language (LEML), a graphic-based system used to visually show the structure and flow of a lesson or course. When used in conjunction with traditional lesson plans, course designers can quickly see gaps in the course for content, activities, and assessments that provide information, dialogue, feedback, practice, and evidence. In addition to initial course design, LEML may be a helpful tool for transitioning your course from one delivery mode to another. LEML employs five building blocks that contain both a description and a method for each icon in the course map or blueprint. Arrows are used to show process flow and communication direction. We invite you to join our conversation about using LEML in the context of HyFlex design, to help faculty new to course design efficiently and effectively transition courses. Bucky Dodd of Lx Studio based at the University of Central Oklahoma is credited with creating LEML and Learning Experience Modeling (LEM).

HyFlex Course Design Workshop August 16-20, 2021
Our next HyFlex Course Design workshop is scheduled for August 16-20, 2021. This fully online workshop is hosted in our own LMS site, is facilitated by several members of the HLC team, and consists of five 90-minute synchronous sessions throughout the week, supported by online resources and asynchronous discussion activities each day.
