Hello, HyFlex Learning Community members!
Spring commencement season has begun! My own university is holding its first in-person commencement events since May 2019. Planning for summer and fall terms has completed or is wrapping up, and students are enrolling in schools and registering for classes. While many institutions are emphasizing a full return to on-campus classes, many students are requesting (and in some cases demanding) more flexible participation options from campus.
What will this next year bring? None of us know for sure, but you can be sure we will need to stay flexible so we can react and adapt as conditions change. Some have already been putting masks back on in classrooms and out in public. COVID is not finished with us yet!
Next Gathering Scheduled: May 12, 2022 Topic: Community-Sourcing a HyFlex Course Quality Rubric
We've scheduled our next gathering event (webinar) for May 12, 9 am - 10 am PDT (GMT/UTC -7) to begin "community-sourcing" a HyFlex course evaluation rubric. Many of us use rubrics to evaluate the quality of online course design (and sometimes teaching), but how many have this for their HyFlex courses? None we know of. Let's build one together for all of us to use. We will share a cloud-based rubric for the community to add to and use as desired. Bring your ideas, questions, and comments, and join us live online if you can.

HyFlex "In the News"
This month I am highlighting two recent news items discussing HyFlex on campuses with a focus on the positive student experience evidenced by demands for more options.
1. "HyFlex Course options should be prioritized by UH" by Anna Baker (student) published April 6, 2022 at The Daily Cougar, an online news site published by students at the University of Houston. https://thedailycougar.com/2022/04/06/hyflex-course-options-should-be-prioritized-by-uh/
In this article, Anna Baker outlines the benefits of HyFlex courses for students who need more flexible access to learning, recounting several specific examples of other students at UH. She also described many of the challenges that faculty face when starting to teach in HyFlex. She ends with her summary position: expanding online options, especially with HyFlex courses, would benefit UH students.
2. "On campus one day, online the next: HyFlex classrooms in high demand at UC Clermont" by Amanda Chalifoux pub\slished on April 7, 2022 at the UC (University of Cincinnati) News site: https://www.uc.edu/news/articles/2022/04/hyflex-classrooms-in-high-demand-at-uc-clermont.html In this article, Amanda Chalifoux describes the HyFlex experience at UC Clermont from student, faculty, and faculty development perspectives.
