Hello, HyFlex Learning Community members!
We hope your winter/spring has started well. Many of us have returned, at least partially, to campus operations and are once again able to serve our students in person as conditions allow. We're also still hearing from many students and faculty that they aren't ready for the classroom experience yet, or at least not like it used to be. As we said last month, we aren't through with this pandemic yet, and it still looks like we'll be living with this for the rest of this academic year, and probably longer in some ways. Even places that only used HyFlex (or similar) approaches to "get through" the pandemic are finding it very difficult to return to their old normal, unsurprisingly. How can we help?
HyFlex "In the News"
This month we highlight two recent News stories that address this very issue of the return to normalcy so many are looking for.
1. From Inside Higher Ed February 6, 2022, by Joshua Kim. "When HyFlex Works" https://www.insidehighered.com/blogs/learning-innovation/when-hyflex-works
This blog post explains the value that one academic program realized when they moved to HyFlex delivery. it's nice to read about these cases where HyFlex is a very good fit for the students, faculty, and curriculum. Will we hear more of these stories as we create our new normal? I certainly hope so!
2. From "The Student Life" Feb 10, 2022, the student newspaper of the Claremont Colleges (a group of five schools in Southern California).
https://tsl.news/opinion-the-5cs-should-make-their-courses-hybrid-flexible-this-semester/
The schools want to return to full classroom (only) instruction now, but the students are petitioning and demanding a continuance of flexible (HyFlex) options for Spring. The article explains their rationale and demands for HyFlex options. Will the student voice be enough to change some administrative decisions? One certainly hopes the student voice is part of the decision-making process.
Wondering what the research says about HyFlex efficacy and other measures? You can find about 120 publications (2007-2022) about HyFlex design, implementation, and evaluation at https://www.hyflexlearning.org/bibliography
Mailing List Feature
We recently added an email list for those wishing to send messages to others in the HyFlex Learning Community who have signed up for the list. This should be a useful tool for us to use to ask and answer questions and share resources and stories of practice in a less formal manner than the discussion forums and blog comments. To subscribe to the list, visit Join our Mailing List to enter your name and email address.
