We taught our first HyFlex course during the summer of 2017. This course (FINC 321) was also one of the first undergraduate courses offered online as part of a new initiative called Take St. Thomas Home for the Summer. In our first evaluation we wanted to gather enough information to assure the administration that the model worked. Below are a few key findings.
      • Enrollment significantly increased! From 16 in previous version of the course to 48 the 2nd time it was offered with an expansion of the enrollment cap.
      • ‘Average’ attendance in each delivery mode. During the first year, it was roughly half and half for online and in-person attendance. From year 1 to year 2, students participated less in-person (13%) and more asynchronously online (81%) with only 6% participating synchronously online.
      • Instructor course evaluations. Remained consistent each year (4.5/5.0).
      • Grades. Per the instructor, the average student grades remained approximately the same, but, he noticed more A’s and more F’s.
      • Results of FINC 321 2018 Student Survey.
      o 40% response rate (19/48)
      o 63% preferred asynchronous online, 32% in-person, and 5% synchronously online
o Both online and in-person instruction considered useful
o Students experienced few (42%) or no (52%) technical glitches

Dr. Hinck, I was wondering if you could share the questions you asked and/or the thinking that went into your evaluation. We are looking for models of what other institutions wanted to know, what was the most important to find out about Hyflex. Thank you.

Hi Susan, apologies for the delayed response! Below is our survey. Please let me know if you have any questions.

      Thanks,
      Glori

Welcome to the University of St. Thomas HyFlex Classroom Study and thanks for your contribution!
You have volunteered to participate in a research project designed to explore the impact of the HyFlex learning environment on the student experience and student performance. The HyFlex learning environment allows students to choose how they participate in a course on a class-to-class basis.

The purpose of this questionnaire is to give you a chance to tell how you feel about your FINC 321 experience. Your response will help guide development of future learning environments at the University of St. Thomas.

All individual responses to this survey are confidential in accordance with the professional and ethical research guidelines of the University, and stored in secure University facilities.
