Upcoming Schedule for Synchronous Participation:
January 6-10, 2025. Optional live sessions each day (11:00 am – 12:30 pm PT), online activities throughout the workshop. Fully asynchronous participation is supported.
The HyFlex Course Design Workshop helps faculty and instructional designers implement Hybrid-Flexible (HyFlex) instruction in their courses.
This interactive workshop is available both synchronously and asynchronously. Participants review effective HyFlex design and teaching practices, engage in reflective discussions, and draft an initial HyFlex course design; preparing them, in their own contexts, to:
* Develop a course plan enabling flexible student participation in multiple delivery modes (HyFlex).
* Revise a set of student learning outcomes for at least one HyFlex course.
* Identify existing and needed content resources for at least one course.
* Plan for effective engagement strategies that support meaningful interaction throughout a course.
* Implement effective assessment approaches that work well in all supported instructional modes.
* Plan for evaluating the impact of HyFlex delivery on student participation, achievement, and other organizational goals.
Participants who complete all activities and assignments receive two HyFlex Learning Community achievement badges: HyFlex Fundamentals and HyFlex Planning. (badge information)
Format
The workshop is highly interactive, combining information presentation, synchronous and asynchronous discussion of real-life cases, and reflective application exercises.
The workshop is hosted in the HyFlex Learning Community’s Canvas LMS, and includes five sessions, normally scheduled over a one-week period. Each workshop session begins with an optional 90-minute interactive (synchronous online) discussion of workshop session content, accompanied by in-depth information and activities in the HyFlex Learning LMS, and concludes with application-oriented interaction among participants in an asynchronous discussion forum.
After the final live session, participants complete an application activity that asks them to create an initial plan for their first HyFlex course. Worksheets and sample high-level HyFlex course plans are available to support learners in this exercise. Participants who complete all activities and assignments receive two HyFlex Learning Community achievement badges, HyFlex Fundamentals and HyFlex Planning. (badge information)
After the workshop concludes, content, posted activities (containing the discussions and work of the participants), and all workshop resources remain available to support ongoing implementation and expanded faculty development efforts for a period of one (1) year.

3-Steps for Transitioning to HyFlex with a new workshop format!
The 3-Steps for Transitioning to HyFlex is now offered as self-paced asynchronous instruction with rolling admission dates. You have up to 6 weeks to complete the workshop from the date you start the workshop. Contact us for more information or purchase workshop enrollment.
The problem
In 2020, HyFlex became the newest buzzword in education. HyFlex is not a fad. HyFlex design and delivery permit continuity of course delivery for when life happens for learners and teachers. Many teachers are hesitant to adopt HyFlex teaching and learning. They think or have heard that it is too difficult, too time-consuming, and struggle with the idea of working on a course without support or compensation. Yes, it does take time to curate or develop alternate, equitable activities. It does take time to add interaction and engagement to a course to which you are adding a different modality.
The solution
That said, this workshop shares a process for transitioning a course from one modality to another. The structure saves you time. You may attend as an individual, partner, or group. Developing with others as a team saves even more time and can lead to better product. This workshop applies to course development, not just transition. Using this process to develop for all modalities at one time is both efficient and effective.
The HyFlex classroom is not the same as Blended or Flipped
Discover the difference between HyFlex course design and the blended or the flipped classroom while crafting your own HyFlex lesson. Intentionally designed HyFlex courses are engaging and successful learning experiences. While the HLC’s foundational workshop, “HyFlex Course Design” provides a high-level overview of HyFlex and course design, this workshop drills down to the lesson level – the structure and flow of a HyFlex lesson. Start now transitioning your class for HyFlex course redesign one lesson at a time in advance of your next academic semester.
Who should attend?
Faculty creating their own HyFlex courses, instructional designers assisting faculty with HyFlex course design, and professional development staff will learn how to change a lesson from one delivery mode to another. Templates and rubrics guide the learning activities.
About the workshop
During this project-based workshop, you will experience the challenges of designing for multiple delivery modes offered simultaneously. You will use the following steps to create a bimodal, lesson:
- Document
- Review (& Revise)
- Complete (& Extend)
Creative Commons (reusable, shareable) rubrics and templates guide the project development.
Bonus
In addition to the three foundational projects, there are three optional activities to facilitate lesson planning, interaction, and engagement. Numerous just-in-time readings on course design topics are included in the workshop to help you develop your lesson.
Outcomes
In this workshop, you will:
- Populate a lesson planning template with the current activities of one lesson for one delivery mode.
- Use a rubric to review and revise the current lesson plan activities.
- Populate the lesson planning template for a different delivery mode.
The HyFlex Learning Community Course Quality Rubric (new in 2023!) is now an optional part of the workshop to help you review your lesson.
After the workshop concludes, content, posted activities (containing the discussions and work of the participants), and all workshop resources remain available to support ongoing implementation and expanded faculty development efforts for a period of one (1) year.
